As the dust settles in the first weekend of college football, it is time dissect some of the things we saw. Most recently, Spartan fans are feeling a little down after former WR Keon Coleman had a big first game for Florida State in his debut. While not having Coleman isn’t ideal, it is not something Michigan State football fans should be extremely worried about.
Michigan State recruited a huge haul of wide receivers in the 2022 recruiting class, and with the trio still remaining at the school, having one year under their belt, they are poised to have a big season for Michigan State:
Tyrell Henry
Tyrell Henry took social media by storm when he made an unreal one-handed touchdown grab in MSU’s win over Central Michigan. Henry brings a unique skillset to MSU’s wide receiver room, and Spartan fans got their first glimpse of it Friday night.
Jaron Glover
Ron Glover may have saved MSU’s day on Friday night. With the Spartans trailing 7-3 late in the first half, facing a third and long, Noah Kim threw a deep ball that Glover made an insane catch on – extending a drive that would lead to a score. Glover showed what he can bring to the table as a big play receiver.
Antonio Gates Jr.
This one is real encouraging, and for many reasons. Gates Jr. has the tools to be a solid wide receiver, and while he didn’t complete any of his targets Friday, he did do something worth noting.
Gates Jr. was the highest ranked run blocker on MSU according to PFF, showcasing his great ability to aid the run game and be a willing blocker. A skillset fans and coaches love to see from the guys on the outside.
Conclusion
In summation, MSU appears to have hit on all three of their wide receivers in the 2022 recruiting class, and position coach Courtney Hawkins has done wonders in developing that talent. The Spartans receiver room is in a very good spot in the right now, but also for the years to come.
