Michigan's chief medical executive says the state has moved past the worst of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak it has ever recorded, even as the official case total keeps climbing every weekday. The reason for that apparent contradiction is a reporting backlog: most illnesses being added to the dashboard began weeks ago.
Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian told CIDRAP News that the worst is behind the state, saying "The worst is behind us" based on the data available today. She said the vast majority of recently reported cases involve people whose symptoms began before July 16, and she stressed that the assessment applies to Michigan alone.
