The US State Department is currently working to confirm the citizenship status of Michigan doctor Kamel Ahmad Jawad, who tragically lost his life in Lebanon on Tuesday. While spokesperson Matthew Miller initially referred to Jawad as a legal permanent resident, he later emphasized that regardless of his official status, Jawad is considered an American and his death is a profound tragedy.

Miller expressed heartfelt condolences to Jawad's family during a briefing, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding his citizenship. The department is actively reviewing records to ascertain whether Jawad held American citizenship, as indicated by his family.

Jawad's family revealed that he was killed by an Israeli airstrike while courageously assisting individuals in Nabatieh, Lebanon. In his final days, Jawad selflessly remained near a local hospital to aid vulnerable populations, including the elderly, disabled, and financially disadvantaged.

His daughter shared that Jawad acted as a protector, offering essential supplies and support to those in need, even settling their debts anonymously. Despite the dangers he faced, Jawad reassured his loved ones that his actions were driven by his passion for helping others and his deep connection to his homeland.
