Michelin Guide makes announcement on Nottingham's Restaurant Sat Bains and Alchemilla

The prestigious Michelin Guide today announced the latest restaurants to be awarded new stars.

Some have gained, some have stayed the same and a number have lost the revered accolade.

It's good news for Nottingham, with no change for the city's top two restaurants.

Restaurant Sat Bains, in Lenton Lane, has retained its two stars making it Nottingham's most highly decorated restaurant.

The restaurant, recently crowned number one in the UK by elite restaurant guide Harden's, was first awarded a star in 2003 and a second in 2011. It also has a Green Star for its sustainable approach to gastronomy.

Run by renowned chef Sat Bains and his wife Amanda, the duo have recently given the restaurant a makeover to improve the experience for diners who often travel hundreds of miles to sample the ten-course tasting menu's exquisite dishes of chawanmushi with crab and fennel and mallard with cabbage, blackberry and hoisin sauce.

Mr Bains said: "We're so chuffed to retain our two stars. I think British gastronomy is probably at the strongest it's ever been.

"It's been an amazing year. The team at RSB have never been stronger. Amanda and I would like to thank every single one of them and we are looking forward to a great 2022."

Mr Bains congratulated a number of the restaurant's former chefs who have gone on to receive stars including Tom Shepherd at Restaurant Upstairs in Litchfield, Gareth Ward at Ynshir, and Ricki Weston at Whatley Manor.

Alchemilla, run by Alex Bond, in Derby Road, has kept standards high and held onto the one star it was awarded in 2019.

Mr Bond said: "There's so many talented chefs out there making serious waves.

"'We're delighted to have retained our Michelin star again this year. It's been a rollercoaster and still with lots of uncertainties but we've remained strong as a team and continued to develop and be creative.

"I'm extremely happy for my colleagues and friends in the industry today too and congratulate those who have joined Michelin status and those who have gone one further and gained more stars, well done."'

Since opening in 2017, the fine dining restaurant has wowed food lovers in the stunning surroundings of a red-brick building where carriages were stored in the 19th century for a former coach house.

Also ranking 14th in the Harden's Top 100, the restaurant serves five, seven and ten-course tasting menus featuring dishes where planted-based ingredients are the star of the show.

Dishes such as lobster, chanterelle, burnt lemon and brown butter and celeriac cooked in whey, squid, black garlic and green olive are served.

The 2022 Michelin Guide features 1,285 restaurants across Great Britain and Ireland, with a total of 194 stars, offering "an impressive illustration of the vibrancy, creativity and excellence of the British and Irish culinary scenes."

The big reveal took place online once again this year.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said: Naturally we were disappointed to be unable to host this event in person.

"However, we wanted to celebrate the achievements of the country’s top chefs, who have fought hard not only to survive, but to excel in these challenging times."
