Pundit Michael Owen highlighted the importance of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson over the course of the season.
Alisson has played a major role the past nine months as the Reds attempted to wrestle back the Premier League title from Man City, taking the league race down to the wire. Heading into the final day of the season, Jurgen Klopp's side were one point behind City and needed Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa to take points off the league leaders.
Liverpool would have needed to win themselves and found themselves a goal behind to Wolves. Sadio Mane levelled and Alisson was on hand to deny Hee-Chan Hwang in what proved to be a vital save. Mohamed Salah came off the bench after the break to give his side the lead and score his 23rd league goal of the season, while Andy Robertson secured the three points late on.
LFC RATINGS: Alisson excellent and Thiago immense against Wolves
REACTION: What happened inside Anfield in 90th minute speaks volumes
In Manchester, City had scored three goals in five minutes to complete a remarkable comeback over Aston Villa, 3-2, and secure their fourth title in five years under Pep Guardiola - Klopp's Reds being the only team to win a league title in that period back in 2020. Though the scoreline at Anfield ultimately made no difference to where the trophy ended up, Alisson's save in the opening 45 minutes once again showed why he's seen as one of, if not the, best goalkeeper in world football.
Having kept 20 clean sheets over the season, tied alongside Man City's Ederson, Owen said during the match that Alisson has been a standout of the Premier League season.
“How big a save could this be [saving Hwang’s one v one effort in the first half],” Owen told Premier League Productions. “This was a brilliant save. It was similar to the chance at the other end when Sadio Mane came in and scored.
“Alisson, he has been one of the stars of the show. The stars of the Premier League this season.”
The Brazilian shotstopper is expected to start in Paris this weekend when Liverpool face Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Victory would see the Merseyside club secure a cup treble, having already won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season.
