Michael O'Leary-sponsored Cheltenham Festival race to be named in honour of the late Jack de Bromhead

Henry de Bromhead's late son Jack will have a race run in his memory at the Cheltenham Festival next March.

The 13-year-old was tragically killed in a fall on Rossbeigh beach in early September when riding at the Glenbeigh pony racing festival in Kerry.

His father and leading trainer De Bromhead has revealed that the Mares' Novices' Hurdle on the opening afternoon of the 2023 four-day Festival will be run in honour of Jack.

“Michael O’Leary (of sponsors Ryanair) has very kindly said they are going to name the mares’ novices’ hurdle the Jack de Bromhead Mares Novices’ Hurdle, which is incredible," said de Bromhead at Fairyhouse racecourse on Tuesday.

Jack's untimely passing rocked the racing community with hundreds of mourners attending his funeral in county Waterford. He was the only son of Henry and Heather, who also have two daughters in Georgia and Mia, Jack's twin.

A talented pony rider tipped for future stardom, he had only just completed his first week as a boarder in Kilkenny College before the tragic accident.

Leading trainer De Bromhead has enjoyed huge success at Cheltenham in recent years, winning two Champion Hurdles with Honeysuckle and two Gold Cups with Minella Indo and A Plus Tard.

He'll now be doing his best to honour his late son by winning the race named in his memory next March, with Friday's Down Royal winner Magical Zoe top of the list.

“I’m hoping to do a Willie (Mullins) on it and try and fill the field if at all possible! We’ll certainly be aiming her towards there I would imagine."

De Bromhead has been slowly returning to racing following his devastating loss and last month thanked people for the support he and his family received following Jack's death.

"We've had a lot of tough weeks but the support from our family, friends and this industry - especially our industry - has been unbelievable," he said.

"Every bit of support we get gives us a little bit of strength and we feel incredibly lucky to have everyone around us."
