Crochet leaves with apparent injury
An otherwise good night ended badly as left-hander Garrett Crochet left in the eighth inning with an injury. Crochet, who struck out Sebastian Almonte leading off, appeared to make a sweeping motion with his left arm after a pitch to the next hitter and left with Sox training staff. There was no immediate word from the Sox on the nature of the injury.
Crochet gave up five runs in his previous outing after recording three scoreless appearances to start the spring.
Kopech improves over first 2 innings
Making his first start of the spring, right-hander Michael Kopech gave up a homer to Jonathan India on his second pitch, then looked fine in two innings of work. Kopech struck out Tommy Pham and Brandon Drury looking, hit a batter and gave up the one hit. He touched 98 mph.
“The second pitch I’ve thrown this spring and I didn’t throw it with much conviction,” Kopechsaid. “Big league hitters, it’s going to happen if you don’t. Welcomed me back real quick. After that, I settled in and started throwing stuff with a little more intensity behind it and I felt pretty good.”
Kopech, on target to slot into the fourth spot in the rotation, is scheduled to start the spring finale Tuesday against the Padres.
Sox power
Yasmani Grandal and Gavin Sheets hit their first homers of the spring against Reds righty Hunter Greene, and Jake Burger hit his second. Luis Robert’s double against Greene was his fourth extra-base hit, including two home runs, in the last six days. All four of Robert’s extra-base hits were to right center.
Adam Haseley played left field and singled and walked his first times up in a Sox uniform.
