Michael Beale reveals Rangers transfer near miss as target 'didn't fit' after face to face meeting

Michael Beale revealed he met with one player about signing for Rangers - but snubbed him because he just "didn't fit."

The Ibrox boss has been busy so far with Cyriel Dessers the latest of six summer arrivals and his eighth signing in total after landing Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin in January. He's not finished there either with talks over Jose Cifuentes advancing while a new centre-back could also be in the works amid links with Auston Trusty, Charlie Cresswell and long-term target Jonathan Panzo.

But while Rangers have moved fast, Beale revealed it hasn't all been plain-sailing. He admits he met with one player over joining but made the decision not to take it further as he just wasn't a good fit. Discussing his sigings so far, Beale said: “There was only one player I met who I felt was not a good fit. He was a very good player but not a good fit. You get in a room, and you get a feeling.

“The club has a rich history, we play in front of packed crowds each week, a lot of the games are live on Sky, and we have European football. There is a lot for players to be excited about.

“You just try to explain how you think they are going to fit. The negotiation with the clubs is the difficult bit. That is when you feel it is out of your control. When you meet a player then that is in your control.”

One player who certainly did fit the bill was Dessers who pens a four-year deal after arriving from Cremonese. But speaking after signing for the club, the Nigeria frontman says his career almost took a very different path.

"I studied at law school for a bit, so I would have become a lawyer if I wasn't a footballer," he said. "I became a professional footballer quite late and for me studying was always plan A and football was plan B. So I started law school, I did it two years, and then I got the chance to become a professional football player, and of course I went for it. Now I'm here, so I think I made the good choice."
