Micah Richards' tongue-in-cheek response to Roy Keane's Sunderland link

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has posted a tongue-in-cheek message after Roy Keane after was linked with the vacant Sunderland job.

The duo have formed an infamous relationship on Sky Sports and have previously joked about working in management together in the future.

According to MailOnline, the Black Cats want to talk to Keane about the head coach role as they look to replace Lee Johnson, who was sacked on Monday.

A source close to the Manchester United legend has indicated to ChronicleLive that he believes Keane would be interested in a return to management, and to Sunderland in particular.

It would be a sensation return for Keane, who left the club 13 years ago after two-and-a-half years in charge.

The former Republic of Ireland international won 43 of his 100 matches at the helm, winning the Championship and the LMA Championship Manager of the Year in the meantime.

After Keane was linked with the Black Cats, Richards has reacted to the news on social media.

He said: "Here we go @FabrizioRomano. I have my stuff packed."

Keane has a high-profile role as a media pundit since leaving his post as assistant to another former Sunderland manager, Martin O'Neill, at Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2019.

After leaving Sunderland, he spent 18 months in charge at Ipswich Town and then went on to work under O'Neill with the Republic of Ireland national team for five years between 2013 and 2018.

Richards and Keane have famously worked on Sky Sports multiple times over the past two years and have been compared to Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher as the best duos in the industry.

Neil Warnock and Grant McCann have also been linked with the Sunderland job following Johnson's departure after 18 months in charge.

The Black Cats currently sit third in League One, seven points behind the league leaders Rotherham United heading into the final 15 matches of the regular season.
