MIAMI - The greater Miami area has become the undisputed capital of viral content on TikTok, outpacing every other major U.S. city by a wide margin, according to a new analysis that measured how often America's biggest cities appear on the social media platform relative to their populations.
The study, conducted by AI company Shogo AI, examined TikTok hashtag data for the 50 largest U.S. cities and ranked them based on the number of posts per 100,000 residents. Rather than simply counting total videos, researchers adjusted the figures to account for population size, revealing which cities generate the most online attention compared with the number of people who live there.
Miami claimed the No. 1 spot with more than 10.6 million TikTok posts and an estimated 2.08 million posts per 100,000 residents, more than double the rate of any other city in the ranking.
Researchers attributed the city's dominance to its beaches, luxury lifestyle, nightlife, tourism, and year-round outdoor culture, which have made it one of the platform's most recognizable backdrops for travel and lifestyle content.
Atlanta ranked second with nearly one million TikTok posts per 100,000 residents. The Georgia city continues to benefit from its influence on music, fashion, food and creator culture, helping it remain a consistent fixture on users' For You Pages.
Las Vegas followed in third place with more than 835,000 posts per 100,000 people. The city's casinos, entertainment venues, nightlife and larger-than-life attractions naturally lend themselves to short-form video content that performs well on social media.
Orlando finished fourth, driven largely by tourism and theme park content. With approximately 832,500 posts per 100,000 residents, the Central Florida city continues to attract millions of visitors who document their vacations at nearby attractions, resorts and entertainment districts.
Boston rounded out the top five. According to the study, the city's blend of historic neighborhoods, college life, professional sports and distinctive architecture continues to resonate with TikTok creators.
Florida emerged as one of the strongest-performing states overall. In addition to Miami and Orlando, Tampa ranked seventh with more than 421,000 posts per 100,000 residents, while Jacksonville also appeared in the top 40.
New Orleans placed sixth, fueled by its vibrant music scene, festivals, nightlife and culinary reputation. Detroit came in eighth as creators increasingly highlighted the city's architecture, arts scene and musical heritage.
Although Chicago ranked ninth in posts per capita, it generated one of the largest overall volumes of TikTok content in the study, with approximately 10.4 million posts. New York led the nation in total posts at 21.3 million but ranked 14th after population adjustments were applied.
Dallas completed the top 10, reflecting the city's expanding creator economy, population growth and lifestyle-focused content.
Several of the country's largest metropolitan areas ranked lower than expected. Los Angeles finished 17th despite generating roughly 9 million TikTok posts, while Houston ranked 13th and San Francisco placed 12th.
At the opposite end of the list, Oklahoma City ranked last among the nation's 50 largest cities, generating just over 31,500 TikTok posts per 100,000 residents. Columbus, Ohio, and Henderson, Nevada, also finished near the bottom, followed by Arlington, Texas, Virginia Beach and Omaha.
Researchers noted that while lower-ranked cities still produce hundreds of thousands of TikTok posts overall, they are less likely to develop the kind of recognizable online identity that consistently drives viral trends across the platform.
To compile the rankings, Shogo AI analyzed the number of TikTok posts associated with each city's primary hashtag, such as #Miami or #Chicago, and compared those totals with the latest population estimates to calculate posts per 100,000 residents. The methodology was designed to identify which cities generate the highest level of TikTok activity relative to their size rather than rewarding cities with the largest populations alone.
