Miami-Dade Officials Are Fighting Over a GTA 6 Promotion — Has Vice City Become Too Real for Miami?

Rockstar's Vice City has spent decades parodying Miami. Now, ahead of GTA 6's November 19 release, Miami-Dade County and Rockstar have reportedly discussed a real promotional partnership that could bring Vice City branding into actual public spaces. Ideas raised by county staff reportedly included Vice City-wrapped Metromover trains, murals on public buildings, and Vice City-branded manhole covers — though officials stress these were preliminary concepts, not an approved campaign. Commissioner Bermudez separately objected to reports about temporarily rebranding Miami International Airport as "Vice City Airport." (NBC Miami; Miami-Dade County)

That leaves Miami-Dade facing an unusual question: is Vice City's growing recognizability valuable tourism marketing, or a parody the county should keep at arm's length?

The Opposition Isn't Really About Whether GTA 6 Will Be Popular

Miami-Dade Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez's official statement effectively concedes GTA 6 will bring enormous attention to the county. His objection is narrower: whether county property and public resources should help promote a fictionalized Miami built around crime and violence. (Miami-Dade County)

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz went further, pointing to murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, and violence against police as activities associated with the franchise. Her statement ends on a remarkably direct line: "Miami-Dade County is not Vice City." (Miami-Dade County)

That line is worth sitting with, because Rockstar's entire pitch depends, in a sense, on audiences recognizing Miami-Dade as Vice City in the first place.

The Mayor's Office Sees the Same Connection as an Opportunity

Carlos Suarez, communications director for the Miami-Dade mayor's office, confirmed Rockstar approached the county about potential opportunities tied to the launch. He said nothing has been formally agreed to, but described the county's clear influence on the game as a possible way to generate revenue while showcasing the area to a massive audience. (CBS News Miami)

That's what makes this more interesting than a typical "violent video game" controversy. Both sides agree GTA 6 is closely tied to Miami. They're arguing over whether that association is an asset or a liability.

Rockstar Isn't Being Subtle About Where Vice City Comes From

Rockstar officially describes GTA 6 as a return to modern-day Vice City within the fictional state of Leonida, and its locations draw unmistakably from South Florida — local outlets have pointed to similarities with Ocean Drive, Miami International Airport, and the Everglades. (Rockstar Games)

That context strengthens the current debate. This isn't a story about Rockstar recreating a building — it's about what happens when the real place starts considering officially advertising through its fictional copy.

Vice City Tourism Is the Bigger Experiment

Cities regularly benefit from movies, TV, and games that make their locations recognizable. But GTA creates an unusual contradiction: Vice City sells beaches, nightlife, supercars, palm trees, and South Florida excess while simultaneously satirizing crime, corruption, and chaos. A Vice City-branded Metromover wrap could function as both tourism promotion and an advertisement for a game where committing crimes is central to how it's played. Neither interpretation is really wrong — which is exactly why county officials are disagreeing over it.

Vice City Isn't Just Imitating Miami Anymore

Rockstar doesn't need Miami-Dade's permission to make millions of players associate Vice City with South Florida — that association already exists. The real decision facing the county is whether to embrace it. A formal partnership could turn GTA 6's November 19 release into a tourism and advertising event for Miami-Dade. Rejecting it would draw a clearer line between Miami as a real community and Vice City as Rockstar's deliberately exaggerated version of it.

Either way, the debate itself shows how far GTA 6's cultural reach extends before the game has even launched. Vice City isn't just imitating Miami anymore — Miami is now arguing about whether it should imitate Vice City back.
