Mexico-U.S. Trade Talks Move Forward, but Steel, Autos and Canada Complicate the Deal

Mexican Economy Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, gestures as he speaks during a press conference in Mexico City on May 27, 2026. Mexico announced it had started formal talks with the United States on revising the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement -- talks overshadowed by tariff pressure from US President Donald Trump. The Briefing:

  • At the G20 Trade Ministerial in Milwaukee, Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Mexico is "closer every day" to new agreements with Washington after a near-hour bilateral session with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on October 1.
  • Mexico's core unresolved demands: reducing the 25% tariff on cars and the 50% levy on steel and aluminum that have remained in place since the July 2025 trade arrangement.
  • With Canada's negotiations suspended since August 22, Mexico is the only party actively advancing formal USMCA review negotiations with the United States.
  • $30.76 billion in remittances reached Mexico in the first half of 2026 — a lifeline tethered to U.S. manufacturing employment, which depends on whether both governments can reach a durable trade framework.
