Mexico shooting: 11 killed in armed attack at soccer field in Guanajuato

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured after gunmen opened fire at a soccer field in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato on Sunday, local authorities said.

The attack took place in a neighbourhood in the town of Salamanca, prompting security forces to launch a search operation for those responsible, according to a statement from the mayor’s office, reported AFP.

“The deaths of 11 people have been confirmed, 10 of whom died at the scene and one more while receiving medical attention at a hospital,” the statement said. “Additionally, 12 people were injured by gunfire and are receiving medical attention,” it added.

Authorities said that four bags containing human remains were also discovered in Salamanca late Saturday night, hours before the shooting.

Guanajuato, a major industrial hub that is home to several popular tourist destinations, remains Mexico’s deadliest state due to ongoing turf wars between criminal groups, according to official homicide data.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this year that the country’s homicide rate in 2025 had fallen to its lowest level in a decade, attributing the decline to her administration’s national security strategy.
