Former Mexican presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez filed an official challenge on Thursday against the 2023-2024 electoral process before the country's National Electoral Institute (INE). Gálvez is not seeking to annul the election but to sanction the involvement of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and the violence from organized crime.
In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter), Gálvez said that she's asking for "exemplary punishment and public reprimand of López Obrador" due to his interference in the electoral process, which concluded with Claudia Sheinbaum's victory, who received almost 60% of the votes in the June 2 elections.

Gálvez asked for a "trial for the protection of the citizen's political-electoral rights" to provide evidence for the presidential qualification. She claimed that the elections were neither clean nor fair, accusing the use of state apparatus of promoting Sheinbaum. "I am asking the Tribunal to sanction the president because there have been more than 50 yellow cards," she stated, in a clear soccer reference.
She will also request an investigation into the use of public resources in Sheinbaum's campaign, arguing that AMLO promoted social programs as his own and warned that they would be eliminated if another party won.
Also on Thursday, a special chamber of The Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPFJ) concluded that AMLO committed political gender violence against Gálvez, reinforcing stereotypes of inferiority due to her condition as a woman and indigenous person in several of his conferences.
According to the Tribunal's resolution, this conduct occurred in at least 11 morning press conferences during the months of July and August, in which López Obrador used expressions suggesting that Gálvez Ruiz's candidacy by the PAN-PRI-PRD coalition was decided by a group of powerful men who selected her to exploit her image as a "woman of the people," in order to gain sympathy from the electorate.
