MEXICO CITY — An accident in Mexico’s capital left one woman dead and 57 injured after two trains collided early Saturday, the second major deadly accident in the city’s public transportation network since 2021.
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on Twitter that the crash happened on Line 3, between the Potrero and La Raza stations. The injured, including a train driver in serious condition, were taken to seven hospitals.
“Our priority is the victims and that there be justice,” Sheinbaum said at a news briefing Saturday afternoon in Mexico City. “There’s an investigation by the prosecutor’s office and investigators are there.”
The collapse of an elevated metro line in 2021 led to the deaths of 26 people. An investigation by an independent company showed that the late-night accident was caused by construction errors and problems with maintenance, including a failure to conduct routine inspections.
Transportation improvements have been a key part of the mayor’s plans for the city, with renovation of another metro line and expansion of the trolleybus system ongoing.
“The metro does have funding,” Sheinbaum said. “We’ll answer all questions and tell you about the investigation when the time comes.”
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador offered his condolences on Twitter for the victims of Saturday’s accident.
