A mayor in Mexico’s western state of Michoacan was shot dead in a public plaza on Saturday evening, in front of scores of people gathered for Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations, authorities confirmed.

The incident highlights the frequent violence faced by local politicians in the country.
