Mewgenics makes a meowssive splash with 1 million copies sold on Steam

2025 was a banner year for breakout indie hits, and now Mewgenics is carrying that momentum forward. The game has officially crossed 1 million copies sold on Steam, a milestone confirmed by its developer, cementing its place as one of the biggest indie success stories of 2026.

The long-awaited title has reached the milestone within two weeks after its launch with minimal marketing, and it proves there is still a massive appetite for wacky and mechanically deep indie games. Blending turn-based strategy, roguelike structure, and chaotic cat breeding systems, Mewgenics carved out a niche that felt both familiar and wildly unpredictable.

Each run challenges players to build a squad of genetically unique cats, complete missions, manage traits, and deal with permanent consequences. The game’s depth with ten classes, replayability, and unpredictable outcomes helped fuel strong word of mouth on Steam, which has allowed the game to retain steady player numbers.

Another key reason for its Mewgenics’ success is how confidently it leans into its identity. The crude and unapologetically humorous, grotesque charm, and complex tactical systems are niche yet polished. Players looking for something different found a game that rewards experimentation and mastery. Strong launch visibility, consistent developer communication, and a clear creative vision also helped it stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

Originally made by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, the game initially started long ago, and it’s been 12 years in the making. McMillen is also widely recognized as the creator of The Binding of Isaac, one of the most influential roguelikes of the past decade. The game served as the foundation of Mewgenics, and the developers used all the knowledge that they gained from the previous game to make a refined and unique experience for the players.

That pedigree set high expectations for Mewgenics, a project that went through multiple delays and reworks over the years before finally reaching players.

In many ways, the game’s one million sales milestone feels like both a commercial triumph and a creative vindication. After years in development limbo, Mewgenics has not only landed on its feet, but it has also clawed its way into the upper echelon of indie launches in 2026.
