Metropolitan Police send Sunderland and Wycombe Trafalgar Square warning ahead of League One final

The Metropolitan Police have warned Sunderland and Wycombe supporters that the area of Westminster is under a Public Space Protection Order. Red and white supporters have frequently visited Trafalgar Square on the eve of a Wembley showdown, but police have been keen to remind fans that this area is protected by the PSPO.

They've reiterated that street drinking is prohibited in all of Westminster. They have encouraged fans to visit licensed premises ahead of the game, rather than Trafalgar Square.

A tweet from the Metropolitan Police Football Unit, said: "A warm welcome to travelling Sunderland and Wycombe supporters for this weekend. Please be aware that due to the Public Space Protection Order street drinking is prohibited in all of Westminster. There are lots of licensed premises to enjoy a drink. Good luck to both teams."

The usage of a PSPO is down to the council's interpretation and while street drinking in other PSPO's is not illegal, police will have the power to stop people drinking alcohol and seize or confiscate alcohol within the controlled area. If a person was to ignore requests by the local authority, police officer or police community support officer, then they could be at risk of regulation.
