Meta has unveiled a new pair of virtual reality glasses weighing around 100g, which the company describes as 'roughly the same as a deck of cards.'
The company is targeting the glasses at home entertainment, with support for IMAX Enhanced content, 3D films and immersive sports broadcasts.
They achieved the lightweight design by moving the processing hardware, battery, and storage into a separate compute puck connected to the glasses.
This model leaves the eyewear itself to handle the display and sensors, making them significantly lighter than conventional VR headsets such as the Meta Quest 3, which weighs 515g.
The Meta VR Glasses are scheduled to launch in spring 2027 for $1,299.99 in the US. According to Meta, the library will continue to grow, with thousands of titles available internationally by the glasses' launch through partnerships with major entertainment and sports platforms.

Meta promises to deliver 'a personal cinema, courtside seat, workspace, and gaming console' in the lightweight wearable. They feature a 5K Infinite Display based on micro-OLED panels, offering 37 pixels per degree alongside pancake lenses.
The glasses also support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and use eye tracking and hand gestures to interact with the device.
Meta says the glasses will be the first VR device to receive IMAX Enhanced certification. Selected films will support IMAX's expanded aspect ratio, while Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream certain films in 3D from November in supported countries.
Titles announced for 3D viewing include The Avengers and Black Panther. Meta's Disney Immersive Cinema app will also offer enhanced versions of films such as Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope.
The company has also announced partnerships with Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, ESPN and Tubi. Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are among the services bringing their 3D catalogues to the platform.
Immersive Sports Will Be Another Focus
Sports viewing is another major part of Meta's plans for the new glasses. The company says partnerships with ESPN, MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC will bring more than 100 immersive live US sporting events each year once the Meta VR Glasses are available.
The rollout will begin with ESPN's Immersive Sports experience on Meta Quest, rather than the new glasses. This service is set to launch with college American football this year, offering 8K streaming and 180-degree views before expanding to additional sports in 2027.
Meta has positioned the broader sports offering as part of its 2027 plans, when the device is scheduled to arrive.

The separate compute puck can provide up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback and supports 45W fast charging. They also use passthrough cameras, allowing users to see their surroundings while wearing the device.
Their open-sided design and passthrough camera let users stay aware of their surroundings while wearing the device. Meta has yet to reveal a UK price for the VR Glasses ahead of their planned Spring 2027 release.
