Met Police apologises for investigation into death of student in London hotel room

  • The death of 19-year-old student Edward Cornes, found in a hotel room with two older men and large amounts of GHB, alcohol and crystal meth in his system, is being re-examined by the Met Police .
  • Edward died in October 2021, shortly after starting university, and two men were arrested on suspicion of murder before the case was dropped.
  • His parents accuse the Met Police of a homophobic approach, losing evidence, failing to interview crucial witnesses, and making inappropriate comments about their son's sexuality and drug use.
  • An inquest concluded Edward's death was drug-related, despite his family's call for an unlawful death verdict based on GHB administration.
  • Following a serious case review that identified 27 failings, the Met Police has apologised for its handling of the investigation and is now reviewing the original case, with the Independent Office for Police Conduct also investigating.
