Met Office weather map shows snow sweeping across region later this week

A weather map has shown how snow will sweep Greater Manchester this week, as temperatures are set to drop to below freezing.

Many parts of Northern England will begin to see more freezing conditions which may bring wintry showers with it. The Met Office has now issued a heavy snow warning for Greater Manchester and other parks of the UK.

The yellow warning states there could be 'heavy snow' across Greater Manchester from Thursday (March 9) onwards. In an update, meteorologists warned: "Heavy snow has the potential to cause significant disruption on Thursday and Friday.

"There is a small chance that long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel could occur. There is a slight chance that roads may become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers

"There is a small chance that communities could be cut off for several days. There is a small chance that long interruptions to power supplies and other services, such as gas, water, telephone and mobile phone coverage, may occur."

A precipitation map from the forecaster has shown where and how much snow will fall across the UK this week. For Greater Manchester, the bulk of the white stuff is expected to fall on Thursday morning.

According to the map, snow will fall in Wigan, Bolton, Bury and Rochdale as of 9am on Thursday. Wigan and Bolton will see more than 4mm of snowfall per hour.

Snow will also fall in Bury, at an estimated 0.5mm an hour. Meanwhile less than 0.5mm of snow per hour will fall in some parts of Rochdale, with others experiencing up to 4mm of hail an hour.

Salford will just be missing out on snow according to the map, with 4mm of hail expected to fall. Trafford will also be avoiding snowfall, more than 4mm of rain is expected to fall in the morning.

Manchester will see up to 4mm of rain an hour. Between 0.5mm and 4mm of hail is forecast to fall in Oldham, but it is predicted Tameside will stay dry in the morning, dodging snow, hail and rain. Stockport will see up to 4mm of rain per hour fall on Thursday morning.

The wintry, wet conditions will travel east as the day goes on, with more rain due to arrive across Wigan, Bolton, Salford and Manchester city centre from around 6pm, continuing into the night.
