Met Office weather forecast: Thunderstorms predicted to hit Bristol area

Thunderstorms are forecast to rumble across the Bristol area on Sunday (July 9) - but they could miss the city. Storms are predicted to bring heavy rain throughout the afternoon, as well as potentially thunder and lightning, according to the Met Office.

The brunt of the thunderstorms is expected to hit the North Somerset area. The Met Office is currently predicting hours of stormy weather for the Weston-super-Mare, Nailsea and Keynsham areas.

However, the city of Bristol is currently expected to be spared the heavy thunderstorms, according to the Met Office. Despite this, the city is still expected to see some rain throughout the afternoon and evening.

When and where are thunderstorms likely to strike?

The Weston-super-Mare area will see a strong chance of thunderstorms between 4pm and 6pm, according to the Met Office. This is in addition is rain showers throughout the day.

There is also expected to be thunderstorms in the Keynsham area at around 5pm. Storms are also predicted to hit the Nailsea area between 2pm and 6pm.

No thunderstorms are currently forecast for the city of Bristol. The Met Office is predicting light showers in the city between 12pm and 9pm.

Met Office South West forecast

The short-range Met Office forecast for the South West states: "Saturday evening (July 8) will be fine with late sunny spells, though hazy at times as wispy cloud moves through. Remaining dry overnight with variable cloud and clear intervals. Less muggy than the previous night. Minimum temperature 13 °C.

"It will be a bright start on Sunday, with scattered showers breaking out from mid-morning and continuing through the day, potentially tuning heavy and thundery, but still with some sunny intervals in between. Feeling fresher Maximum temperature 22 °C.

"Further showers and sunny spells into the new week. These potentially heavy with hail and thunderstorms to begin but becoming fewer and lighter on Wednesday. Temperatures around the seasonal average."
