Met Office's new snow and ice weather warnings for the UK

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice across the UK.

Snow showers will become more frequent through Monday, continuing to feed in on northwesterly winds overnight. Accumulations of a couple of centimetres are possible at low levels, with higher ground expected to see five to ten centimetres in places.

In addition, icy stretches are likely to form following showers. Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said the cold conditions moved in from the Arctic over the weekend.

This week is predicted to be cold with patchy showers, particularly in northern areas, until temperatures rise at the weekend. The Met Office's weather warning for snow and ice is in place from 12pm today until 12pm on Tuesday.

The warning covers Merseyside, Halton, Warrington and Lancashire.

What to expect:

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
