The Met Office has predicted the snow will begin at 9pm on Saturday which is likely to cause treacherous conditions on the roads. Up to 10cm of fresh snow could arrive on higher grounds.

People are being warned of delays on public transport as well as walking along pavements with icy conditions expected throughout the night in freezing temperatures.

What have forecasters said?

The Met Office said: "A band of rain, sleet and snow is expected to move north east wards on Saturday evening, persisting for part of Saturday night then clearing the north of the warning area on Sunday morning. The bulk of the snow accumulations likely to be confined to elevations above 200 m, with 1-3 cm possible, whilst 5-10 cm fresh snow is possible above 400 m.

"Snow is likely to turn to rain before it clears, bringing the onset of thaw, although, during this transition, a brief spell of freezing rain is possible giving icy conditions, mainly over higher ground. Thaw is less likely across the northern half of Scotland, with lying snow remaining through Sunday."

What to expect:

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
