Met Office map shows huge wall of rain to hit UK as heatwave comes to crashing end

Brits fed up with sweltering temperatures can look forward to a “wall of rain” set to hit the UK next week.

Scores of people have enjoyed the sunny conditions today, with the hottest temperatures of 29C felt in Wisley in Surrey.

Sunday’s conditions are expected to breach the current record for the hottest day of the year - so far set at 32.2C on June 10 - with scorching conditions expected in the south east of England.

However, from Monday, temperatures are expected to move closer to the average for this time of year, with a “much fresher feel" expected through the first half of the week.

And on Tuesday maps from the Met Office show much of the country has been warned to expect a “wall of water” heading our way.

Arriving in Ireland and Northern Ireland on Monday evening, the deluge will move over parts of Wales, Scotland and northern England on Tuesday morning.

Until then, the country has potential record temperatures to enjoy on Sunday.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “If you are outside in the sunshine, stay hydrated and wear sun protection.

"It is also going to be a warm humid night tonight and some people may find it uncomfortable for sleeping.

"The minimum temperatures for most will be the mid to high teens. It will be very warm and humid.

"We will see temperatures rise quite quickly tomorrow in the sunshine and we do need to keep an eye on the risk of thunderstorms as we move to the afternoon and evening, particularly across the north east."

Parts of the north on Sunday have been warned to expect lightning, hail up to 3cm in diameter and strong, gusty winds.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms for parts of northern England and Scotland on Sunday from 1pm-9pm.

These could cause localised flooding. Rainfall will "vary significantly, but some locations could see 30-40mm in 1-2 hours", according to the forecaster.

The Met Office said: "Whilst there remains some uncertainty in whether thunderstorms develop as cooler conditions follow from the west, there is a chance that an organised line of thunderstorms could develop across northern Britain during Sunday afternoon before clearing east into the North Sea during the evening.

"This is more likely to happen across eastern parts of the warning area including northeast England and eastern Scotland."

Meanwhile, festival-goers at Glastonbury are taking on "tonnes of fluid" as organisers shared heat safety advice while temperatures soared to 26C on Saturday.
