Met Office issues yellow thunderstorm warning for Bristol and South West

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of thunderstorms for Bristol. Large areas of the South West and South Wales could be in for a soaking today, June 21, as thunderstorms and heavy rain are set to sweep the region from midday until 7pm.

Areas affected by the yellow warning include Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon, Cornwall, and the lower half of Wales. Parts of Dorset and Herefordshire may also receive heavy rain and thunderstorms.

"Some flooding and disruption" could be caused by the unsettled weather, the Met Office has warned. The UK's national weather service has also said that travel times via bus and car may increase as a result of driving conditions being affected by spray, standing water and/or hail.

Train journeys may also be affected, the Met Office has warned, and lightning strikes could cause damage to buildings and structures in South West England and South Wales. The organisation said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out from late morning.

"Many places will miss these, but where they do occur, 20-30 mm rain may fall in 1-2 hours. Showers and thunderstorms will mostly die out by early evening."

The yellow thunderstorm warning comes as music lovers from all around the world descend upon the West Country for the legendary Glastonbury Festival, which was opened to the public at 8am this morning. Emily Eavis greeted revellers at the Worthy Farm site as she opened the gates, with her dad, Michael Eavis, who has recently been photographed in a wheelchair, watching from the comfort of a Land Rover nearby as he waved at festivalgoers.
