The Met Office has warned more heatwaves are possible as it gave its verdict on national reports Britain could be in for more 40C temperatures this summer. It is almost a year since the UK recorded its highest temperature on record, sparking wildfires across the country, including Nottingham.
While the weather hasn't quite reached those extremes, there has been some very warm temperatures over the last few weeks. Now, the Met Office has released its long-range forecast, which states temperatures are expected to be 'well above average' in July.
In its UK forecast for Friday, July 7 to Friday, July 21, a Met Office forecaster said: "Current signals are uncertain moving further into July. A continuation of the above north/south split is possible, particularly earlier on, but it is possible that the situation could flip as we move deeper into July.
"In this scenario, the northern parts of the UK could see increasing amounts of settled, drier weather while southern regions begin to experience a greater risk of rain, showers and thunderstorms. Across the UK, heatwaves are possible during July, with temperatures most likely remaining well above average for the time of year."
While there are no extreme temperatures yet in the forecast for Nottingham, this weekend is expected to be warm, with temperatures hitting 26C on Saturday, June 24 and 28C on Sunday, June 25. Going into next week, temperatures will remain in the low 20s.
