Met Office forecasts 'dangerously cold air' in Canada will raise temperatures in the UK

After a frosty start to February, temperatures are set to rise this weekend as an area of high pressure from the south takes charge. Temperatures are set to reach double figures with very little rain in the forecast.

The reason for the milder area is actually down to "dangerously cold air" moving into parts of Canada and the northeast for USA over the weekend.

Met Office forecasters explain: "This temperature contrast will strengthen and buckle the jet stream - and allow an unusually intense area of high pressure to form close to the UK by Sunday."

While temperatures could reach lows of -25C in parts of North America, here in the UK we could see highs of 10C. The cold weather fuels a powerful jet stream that will move to the east of the UK and help build an intense area of high pressure.

That means most areas of the UK will stay dry with temperatures feeling more springlike than they have at the start of the month, but there is still the potential for some frost at night.

The Met Office forecast for Wales this weekend says: "Saturday will be another cloudy day with occasional light rain and drizzle, largely confined to west-facing hills. Some brighter spells further east, and winds staying light. Milder than Friday. Maximum temperature 11 °C."

The outlook for Wales from Sunday to Tuesday says: "Remaining cloudy with perhaps a few spots of rain and drizzle, mainly in western areas, but some brighter spells at times. Staying mild with some patchy night time frosts."

Here are the temperatures forecast for next week from BBC Weather:

(BBC)

Forecaster Aidan McGivern in his weekend forecast for the whole of the UK: "A mostly cloudy, mostly mild, and mostly dry weekend coming up. A broad warm sector weather will bring a lot of cloud on Saturday that will bring a few spots of rain, but nothing substantial.

"A breeze will bring mild area with double figures and in the teens in some places. Might be some fog patches in south Wales that will clear on Sunday morning. Sunday will be another mild day, above average for the time of year.

"Little change into the start of next week. The very dominant high across Europe holds firm. There will be weather fronts approaching from the west, but they are going to be really slowed down as they arrive against that high pressure, so we keep that relatively mild, relatively moist area from the south. Drier area will also come up with more chance of sunny spells.

"The relatively benign weather pattern continues."

The Met Office long range forecast for the UK up to February 23 says: "Tuesday will likely be dry for most across the UK, with a chance of sunshine particularly in the northwest. Any early mist and fog patches quickly clearing. The odd spot of light rain is possible, mostly across Northern Ireland. The settled weather remaining for many into the end of the week, with some bands of cloud and rain possibly progressing into the north and northwest at times.

"Also, strong winds likely in the north and west, with coastal gales possible here. Further into the period a transition away from high pressure in the south allows for more unsettled conditions to become widespread across the UK at times. Temperatures generally mild or rather mild, although with a chance of cold nights in the south, especially earlier in the period."
