Met Eireann update weather warning for 11 counties as they forecast dangerous conditions to move in for next 24 hours

After a bright start in some parts of the country this morning, Met Eireann has predicted things to take a turn throughout the day.

The meteorological service has warned of thundery downpours and a risk of spot flooding for Friday.

Rain and clouds will start over the west and the southwest this morning, and move across the rest of the country in a northeast direction. Scattered showers will follow, according to Met Eireann.

Things could take a turn for the worse, with heavy rain expected at times.

“There will be heavy and possibly thundery downpours at times, giving a risk of spot flooding,” Met Eireann’s forecast from this morning said.

Temperatures in the afternoon will reach highs of 14 to 19 degrees. It will be warmest in the northeast and turn “noticeably cooler in the southwest through the late afternoon”. It will turn cooler overnight, falling to about 7 to 10 degrees.

Rain is expected to continue, with a Status Yellow Rain and Thunderstorm warning in place from 6pm this evening until 6pm on Saturday in Munster and Connacht. Met Eireann said: “Heavy showers or longer spells of rain with thundery downpours in some places may lead to spot flooding, with the highest rainfall totals likely to be near the west coast on high ground.”

Clearer conditions are expected towards the east with isolated showers expected at times.

Looking ahead at Saturday, it is expected to be “an unseasonably cold, windy and wet day”.
