Met Eireann timeline for Storm Eunice ‘weather bomb’ as wind and snow warnings issued for Ireland

Ireland is still picking up the pieces from Storm Dudley after it battered Ireland with strong winds and heavy rain overnight.

Ferocious winds of up to 110km/h struck, causing traffic chaos and leaving some homes without power.

Now Ireland is braced for its second storm of the week, which is predicted to be “worse” and “more vicious”.

Met Eireann has issued several weather warnings, including a rare triple alert, a 'danger to life' Status Red warning and a Status Orange notice.

Meanwhile, weather expert Alan O'Reilly, from Carlow Weather, warned of a 'weather bomb' as a result of the storms.

He wrote on Twitter: "Storm Eunice is forecast to go from 1004hPa at midday tomorrow to 975hPa at midnight tomorrow night."A drop of 29hPa in 12 hours! That is over twice the criteria for a weather bomb.

"In other words, she will come out of nowhere and hit hard."

Here is a timeline from Met Eireann of what to expect from Storm Eunice over the coming days. You can also follow updates in our live blog.

Thursday

Today will be a blustery day with bright spells and showers, some heavy with hail and temperatures of 5C to 9C.

Things will take a turn early tonight when rain and sleet moves in from the southwest and southeasterly winds strengthen as Storm Eunice approaches, according to Met Eireann.

After midnight rain and sleet will become widespread with falls of snow in places, especially in Connacht and Ulster. It will become stormy overnight in Munster, southeast Leinster and western counties with extremely strong southwest winds, becoming northwesterly with severe and damaging gusts.

There’s a risk of coastal flooding at high tide early on Friday morning, meanwhile lowest temperatures will be 0C to 4C.

Friday

On Friday, it will become very windy or stormy over all of Ireland with very strong northwesterly winds and severe and damaging gusts.

Met Eireann’s latest forecast says that there will be rain, sleet and snow. Disruption to travel can be expected.

Through the afternoon, winds will gradually ease and it will be cold with wintry showers of rain, hail and sleet and temperatures of 2C to 6C.

A Status Red warning is in place for Cork, Kerry and now Clare between 3am and 8am, and in Waterford between 7am and 11am.

While an Orange alert covers Galway, Wexford, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wicklow, Laois, Offaly and Dublin between 3am and 11am.

Of the red warning, Met Eireann warns: "Storm Eunice will track quickly over Ireland tonight and Friday morning bringing severe and damaging winds. Southwest winds veering northwest will reach mean speeds in excess of 80 km/h with gusts in excess of 130 km/h. Some coastal flooding, especially at high tide."

Five counties are also being told to expect "blizzard-like conditions".

A Status Orange snow warning has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo and Roscommon.

Met Eireann says it will bring "heavy sleet and snow leading to blizzard-like conditions in parts with treacherous driving conditions". The warning is in place from 3am until 3pm on Friday.

A nationwide Status Yellow warning for wind, rain and snow comes into force at 1am and lasts until 3pm.

Multiple weather warnings are in place for Storm Eunice (Met Eireann)

Friday night will continue with wintry showers and occasionally fresh westerly winds at first, however later in the night rain will spread eastwards across the country, falling as sleet or snow in some areas. Lowest temperatures of -2C to 2C with freshening southerly winds.

Schools in multiple counties will be closed on Friday.

Saturday

A post on the Met Eireann website reads: “Saturday will start off wet with falls of rain, sleet and snow during the morning and turn to spells of rain and showers as milder air extends from the west.

“Highest temperatures in the afternoon of 5C to 10C with fresh and gusty west to southwest winds.

“On Saturday night, temperatures will increase overnight as southwest winds increase strong and gusty and persistent or heavy rain spreads form the northwest.”

Sunday

Met Eireann’s latest forecast for Sunday is: “The morning will be wet and blustery with widespread rain and localised flooding. The rain will clear away to showers in the afternoon, some of hail or sleet. Afternoon temperatures of 5C to 9C with fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds.

“Sunday night will be very windy with fresh to strong, gusty westerly winds and blustery showers, turning wintry in the north and west. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C.”
