Met Eireann issues urgent three-hour warning for two counties as Storm Franklin to bring 'severe' winds

An urgent weather warning has been issued for two counties as Storm Franklin moves eastwards.

Met Eireann has put the Status Yellow wind alert in place for Wicklow and Wexford from 9am until 12pm on Monday.

The national forecaster warns that Storm Franklin will continue "bringing strong winds and severe gusts to Wicklow and Wexford until midday".

It comes as the third storm in a week will gradually die out on Monday morning, with the last of the nationwide weather warnings in place until 9am.

The Status Yellow wind warning for the entire country says that Storm Franklin will cause very strong winds with severe and damaging gusts.

Met Eireann says: "These winds combined with very high seas will lead to wave overtopping along Atlantic coasts, which may result in coastal flooding."

Meanwhile, a weather expert has said Storm Franklin "left its mark" after it caused severe wind speeds overnight.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says that while the storm will continue to "make noise" throughout Monday morning, the worst of the weather is over.

He said: "That wind is still making a noise but it has peaked now and will slowly begin to ease through the morning as StormFranklin pulls away with lighter winds by afternoon.

"Showers in the Northeast and temperatures rising. Still gusting to 115kph in Donegal in the last hour."

He added that the worst gusts overnight were registered in Co Galway where they hit speeds of almost 140kph.

He said: "The top gust from Storm Franklin at official station was 139kph at Mace Head which also saw sustained winds of 107kph.

"The M4 Buoy saw a max wave height of 28 meters! Franklin has left his mark with a large number of power outages."

It comes as almost 30,000 households across the country are waking up to electricity outages this morning.

Around 29,000 ESB subscribers are without power thanks to the strong winds brought by Storm Franklin.

Most of those affected are in Sligo and Donegal, two of the three countries under a Status Orange warning until 7am.

Crews are working to restore electricity to homes, with people urged to exercise caution around called wires.

The ESB said: "We want to remind you to always assume the electricity network is live, so please always #StaySafe & #StayClear of all electricity wires.

"If you see a fallen wire, a low hanging wire or damage to ESB Networks equipment, do NOT approach it, report it on 1800 372 999."
