Met Eireann issues new Status Orange weather warning for freezing fog in many parts of the country

Met Eireann has issued a new Status Orange warning for parts of the country as the cold temperatures look set to continue.

The Irish meteorological service has issued the warning as a result of freezing fog that will blanket much of the country from noon today.

Many parts of the country will be impacted by this freezing fog, including Connacht, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary.

According to the Met Eireann website, the warning was issued at 10:49am this morning, December 12, and will come into effect from 12pm today until midnight.

A brief statement alongside the warning said: “Freezing fog, dense in places, will persist through the afternoon and into tonight, leading to very hazardous driving conditions.”

Other warnings remain in place, including a Status Orange low temperature and icy weather warning until midday today, a Status Yellow warning for the same conditions valid until Friday, December 16, and a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for Mayo and Donegal, valid until midday today.

It comes as Met Eireann has, unsurprisingly, forecasted “bitterly cold” conditions, with ice and severe frost expected alongside the freezing fog.

The report said: “Frequent showers in west Connacht, falling as sleet or snow away from coasts. Isolated wintry showers will move into eastern and southern counties at times too.

“Temperatures between -2 to +4 degrees, remaining below freezing for much of the north midlands. Light breezes, southeasterly or variable.”

Tonight, temperatures could drop down to as low as -6 in places, with northern counties expected to be particularly cold.
