Met Éireann issues fresh Ireland weather warning with brutal conditions to lash 17 counties

The horrid weather Ireland has been experiencing in recent days is set to continue on Monday with a fresh weather warning from Met Éireann.

The new Status Yellow thunderstorm and rainfall warning will impact 17 counties, including all of Leinster, Waterford, Tipperary, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan.

In its warning, Met Éireann predicts that "heavy showers with thunderstorms are likely."

They say the possible impacts of the weather include spot flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

The warning is valid from 8am to 9pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, meteorologist Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel says Orange-level warnings could occur at some point on Monday.

He said; "Outbreaks of rain this morning will gradually clear away to leave a relatively bright mid to late morning, but showers will develop across the southwest before becoming widespread for a time in the afternoon and evening with many of the showers becoming heavy with some thunderstorms likely.

"Part of the Midlands, East and Northeast are most likely to see these thunderstorms where they will bring with them a risk of frequent lightning, heavy rain, hail and some gusty winds. Localised flash flooding is also likely with totals of up to 40-50 mm falling in a relatively short period of time."

In response to Met Éireann only issuing a yellow alert, Cathal suggested the warning is "likely to be upgraded once the storms have already started this afternoon. I believe warnings should be given in advance and not as things occur."
