Met Eireann has released list of the coldest areas in Ireland over the weekend as temperatures as low as -8.1 recorded

Met Eireann has released a list of the coldest areas in Ireland on Saturday night as freezing conditions look set to stay for the rest of the week.

The Irish Meteorological Service said it was “very cold” on the night of December 10, with minimum air temperatures well into the minus figures.

Areas such as Markree Castle in Sligo and Mount Dillon in Roscommon had temperatures of -6.6C and -7.4C respectively, but the coldest temperature recorded in Ireland was in Athenry in Galway.

A freezing -8.1C was recorded in this area between 9pm on Saturday and 9am on Sunday.

Other low temperatures were recorded at the likes of Shannon Airport in Clare at -4.9C, Claremorris in Mayo at -4.8C, Ballyhaise in Cavan at -3.7C and Casement Aerodrome in Dublin at -3.6C.

Parts of Meath, Donegal, Kerry, Cork, Tipperary, Westmeath, Cork and Dublin were recorded in and around -2.9C and -1.1C.

Knock Airport and Newport Furnace in Mayo recorded temperatures of -0.5C and -0.1C respectively, while Oak Park in Carlow recorded -0.6C and Johnstown Castle in Wexford recorded -0.7C.

Milder areas on Saturday night included Malin Head in Donegal at 4.3C, Sherkin Island in Cork at 0.8C, Belmullet in Mayo at 0.6C, Mace Head in Galway at 0.5C, and Roches Point in Cork at 0.3C.

It comes as a new Status Orange Freezing Fog warning has been put in place for parts of the country including Connacht, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary.

It came into effect at noon on Monday and will be valid until midnight.

A Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning is also in place throughout this week, ceasing on Friday, December 16.
