Met Eireann forecasts snow in parts of Ireland this week as big weather change expected

Ireland is in for a big chance this week as winter temperatures bring on snow showers in some areas.

Conditions are due to be changeable and generally unsettled with overall mild weather, but as the week goes on, this is due to turn a lot colder.

Today, January 31, will be dry in most areas however, there will be isolated heavy showers in the north and northeast.

Light rain or drizzle will mostly affect the north and northwest, especially during this evening, with highest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees in moderate westerly winds.

Tonight is expected to be mostly cloudy to overcast with some light rain or drizzle, but mainly over Ulster.

The dry weather will continue elsewhere with just a few spots of drizzle and lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, Met Eireann says.

Tuesday will be a breezy and dull day with many areas overcast, with some patchy drizzle or light rain, but once again a lot of other areas will have dry periods.

Wednesday will bring a decent amount of dry weather to start, with some drizzle in parts.

It’ll be generally cloudy, with occasional brighter periods, but drizzle will turn more persistent in western parts through the afternoon.

Highest temperatures will range from 9 to 11 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds.

Then on Thursday, things begin to take a turn with the arrival of heavy rain at times, moving into the northwest during the morning, before spreading southeastwards across the country to all areas during the day.

It will become windier and may be squally at times as southwest winds increase from fresh to strong and gusty.

Winds will veer westerly later as drier, clearer and colder weather develops in the north and west.

Snow is expected to arrive overnight in Ulster, with lows of 0 to +4 degrees expected.

Friday will then bring cold and breezy weather with some showers alongside bright or sunny intervals.

There will be some hail or sleet showers in the morning, mainly over Ulster, but showers will ease later in the day as westerly winds ease.

As for the weekend, the current outlook from the Irish forecaster will see conditions “become milder and cloudier again over the weekend with showers.

“Showers will mainly affect northern areas with drier weather further south. Breezy at times too, in a westerly airflow.”
