'Messed it up' - Thibaut Courtois explains Liverpool error and gives honest Alisson Becker verdict

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois refused to accept his side’s Champions League tie against Liverpool was over after they ran riot at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah had initially fired the Reds in front at Anfield - but Vinicius Junior’s double brought Real level before half-time. Carlo Ancelotti’s side then ran riot in the second-half.

Eder Militao headed in Luka Modric's free-kick to turn the tie in Real’s favour before Karim Benzema scored twice. However, Real’s goalkeeper refused to accept that his side has already secured their place in the last-eight ahead of the second-leg.

“No it is not,” the Belgium international replied when asked if the tie was over. “I think last year against Chelsea we thought the same and suddenly they were up 0-3 in the Bernabeu.

“You know this can happen and we have to be careful, especially with this new away goal rule. You can not relax. They have a lot of quality up front to score goals and we have to concentrate, but obviously it is better to be up than down.”

Reflecting on his error for Liverpool’s second goal, Courtois said: "That second Liverpool goal was slightly bad luck that I messed it up.

"I had the ball under control and I wanted to pass it immediately but I saw that Salah had stopped so I changed my mind and tried to move it on to my right foot but it bounced off my knee.”

Courtois then added on the game, saying: "Vinicius Jr's goal gave us wind beneath our wings and then Alisson Becker had a moment like mine and everyone knows that, on the counter-attack, we're strong.

"We're never beaten, we always react. Those two quick goals did help us to do that. We were calm, mentally, and when we are on the rise we play well.

"It's my first time playing Champions League football at Anfield when fans are in the stadium and the fact that there was applause from Liverpool supporters for Luka and Karim just proves that people here know how to appreciate guys who are great players."
