Parents in Merseyside have been asked to speak to their children about the consequences of deliberate fire setting after firefighters battled more than 3,000 deliberate blazes last year.
In 2021, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS) was called to 3,223 deliberate secondary fires, with many involving wheelie bins, playground equipment, woodland and rubbish being set alight. Since last Thursday alone (July 14), MFRS has attended 157 grass fires, a number of which are believed to have been started deliberately.
On Saturday, a blaze broke out at Brackenwood Golf Club, in an act club secretary, Keith Marsh, termed as "complete vandalism". And Merseyside Police has also issued a warning after crews were called out to two separate fires , believed to have been caused by youths, in Birkenhead yesterday.
