Merseyside restaurant with 'stunning' panoramic views where you 'feel like you're abroad'

A Wirral restaurant serving delicious Mediterranean food offers diners stunning views over to North Wales.

Sheldrakes in Heswall has been around for years, but it has changed ownership numerous times. It currently serves a variety of Mediterranean dishes, including tapas and sharing platters.

When I visited it was a gloriously sunny Wednesday evening, and although the restaurant was fairly quiet with only a few couples enjoying drinks on the large terrace, the waiter was very welcoming and sat us at a table by the large floor to ceiling windows.

Sheldrakes has bright white walls and Moroccan décor. This paired with the sunshine streaming through the windows and the eclectic mix of music playing softly in the background, I felt like I was on holiday abroad. I instantly relaxed as soon as I was seated, and ordered a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc (£6.80) which I sipped as I admired the view.

As for food, the menu was different to the one shown on the website. At first I was disappointed by this, but the menu in front of me had such an extensive choice of Mediterranean dishes that the disappointment faded quickly.

I opted for the vegetarian platter (£20) which I shared with another person. It included Halloumi pie, marinated Mediterranean vegetables, roasted artichokes, asparagus spears, buffalo mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes, olives and bread.

We also ordered a side of skinny fries (£3), not knowing how big the platter would be. When the vegetarian platter arrived, we were very impressed. The food looked delicious and we couldn’t wait to dive in.

Often when I order a sharing platter, there are elements I love and others that I’m not too fussed about. This wasn’t the case with Sheldrakes’ vegetarian platter, as I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

Everything was cooked perfectly, and the mix of exotic flavours was delicious. There was plenty for the two of us, with both of us feeling full afterwards. The stand out elements for me were the Halloumi pie and the soft flavoured bread which had a sweet taste that I loved. Both were packed full of flavour and complimented the other items well.

It’s a shame the restaurant wasn’t busier, but this didn’t affect my experience too much. The amazing weather, beautiful setting and delicious food made for a delightful evening. I could have sat on the terrace all night watching the sunset.

Sheldrakes is based on Banks Road, Heswall, Wirral, CH60 9JS. You can book a table here.
