Memphis Depay's comments could boost chances of surprise transfer to Tottenham

Barcelona striker Memphis Depay has previously dropped a hint that he would be open to returning to English football amid links with Tottenham.

The former Manchester United forward and Dutch international previously spent 18 months at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017 and made 53 appearances in all competitions, but scored just seven times prior to leaving the club in January 2017.

Now, Depay has been linked with a return to England and a potential move to Tottenham. Spanish outlet Sport report Barcelona want €20million (£17m) to part company with the forward, who they signed on a free transfer last summer.

Back in 2019, Spurs were linked with Depay while he was at former club Lyon, prior to his move to Barcelona. When asked then about a potential return to England, the forward did not rule out the idea.

"It's a very nice competition," Depay said at the time. "It's up to the club that is interested. I belong in a team that plays good football and can play around me so that I can do my thing. I will never rule it out."

Spurs have already spent big in this summer's transfer window as Antonio Conte looks to build a squad befitting of a return to the Champions League for the first time in three years.

Tottenham's total spend so far this summer has risen to £85m following the four permanent deals they have so far got over the line. Spurs completed a £60m club-record signing to bring Brazilian forward Richarlison from Everton to north London, as well as splashing out £25m on midfielder Yves Bissouma from Brighton.

Conte has also completed the double free transfer signings of versatile winger Ivan Perisic and goalkeeper Fraser Forster following their exits from Inter Milan and Southampton respectively.

As well as potential interest in Depay, Spurs have also been heavily linked with Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, whose stunning form on loan at Nottingham Forest last season saw him help the Tricky Trees to promotion to the Premier League. He also became an England Under-21s international in the process.

Spurs' return into the Champions League group stages will see them enter Pot 2 of the competition's draw, taking place next month. That will see them avoid all English clubs in the group stages, as well as the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and RB Leipzig.

The last game Spurs played in the competition was in May 2019, losing 2-0 in the final to Liverpool.
