It seems like Melbourne’s dating scene has served up a fresh scoop of drama, involving a beloved institution — Yo Chi. A local lad has found himself in the crosshairs of TikTok’s merciless roasting machine after he decided to play dessert police on a date.
Apologies to any lactose sensitive baddies, you’re in for a wild ride.
Nightmare date with Yo Chi boy
Phlin Martin posted a video on his TikTok account this week titled, “Nightmare date story” — a five minute retailing of his most recent failed dating experience.
According to Phlin the date started off great with, “no awkward tension” in the car, but things take a turn seemingly as soon as they enter their date’s destination — Yo Chi.
“I grab the normal size cup, that’s all you need, anything else — outrageous,” Phlin says. He clarifies that the middle cup is okay to grab because people can get hungry, but god forbid you grab the big cup because apparently that is “outrageous” and a “glutinous amount of frozen yoghurt”.
Unlucky for Phlin, his date goes to for the “big cup” and he is now freaking out as he realises that he’s “probably going to have to pay for this” date that he asked her out on.
They go to fill up their cups with Phlin reporting his date filled up her cup with “an absurd amount of yoghurt”. Things take a turn for the worse when she goes for the toppings and he accuses her of having too much.
“I don’t know if it’s because I’m really poor or I’m actually just a reasonable human, but when I put my toppings on, it’s really a reasonable amount. I’m not gonna put straight scoops, fucking scooping that shit on. I’m maybe putting like one little boba ball on it,” he says. That sounds like a terrible froyo cup but each to their own I guess.
Phlin reluctantly pays for her yoghurt cup, which he says came up to “like $330”, which TBH would be impressive to rack up at Yo Chi.
The complaints don’t stop there because Phlin becomes embarrassed when seeing his date “wolf down” her bowl.
In what I can only assume is an attempt to come across as a good guy, Phlin says, “Mind you this is a small girl, I’m not judging here. I was just in absolute shock and disbelief at what was happening in front of my eyes.” Yup totally not judging. How dare she indulge in the very purpose of going out for froyo?!
He then explains that she is now looking over at his frozen yoghurt cup (I can’t imagine why with his one boba ball), and says to him in a funny voice, “Mmm that looks really good”, and “Hey, look over there”, before she steals his cup in a joking manner.
Commenters have pointed out that this was a reference to a skit from in the show I Think You Should Leave and actually think this girl seems like “wife material” for the whole thing.

Tik Tok is having a field day roasting Yo Chi boy
Phlin’s video has reached 2 million views at the time of writing and has amassed many a comment roasting him.
One user summed up what most other users felt saying, “I hope for her sake there isn’t a second date.”
In a move that could only be described as iconic, Yo Chi decided to jump in on the action and try to work it out on the remix with their own video on the situation.
This masterpiece featured a montage of someone filling their Yo Chi cup to the brim (as they should), while the audio from Phlin’s video and “Feminomenon” by Chappell Roan played in the background. They were also quick to clarify some inconsistencies in Phlin’s story, with the end frame reading, “FYI we only have one cup size.” Get that social media marketing team a raise stat!
Phlin DGAF about the haters
Despite the feedback from the internet, Phlin came back with a second TikTok video to defend himself. He starts off the video thanking everyone who thought the video was funny, the way he says it was intended to be.
Bu then he goes on to say that he’s disappointed by the way the internet reacted saying, “What you are doing is you’re being a little bit disrespectful, it’s a bit shitty”. He refers to the comments defending his date’s cup size as “toxic feminism”.
TikToker Cat City took to her account to share her thoughts on the whole “nightmare” situation. She said, “Have you ever watched a single female’s nightmare date experience on TikTok? Like this isn’t a nightmare.
“Fearing for your life, wondering if you’re gonna make it home okay, being sexually assaulted — that’s a nightmare first date experience. Not to discredit your emotions right now, but this is not what you think it is”.
Let this be a lesson to all the would-be dessert dictators out there: judge not, lest ye be judged by the court of TikTok. And to Yo Chi boy, maybe next time stick to coffee dates.
