A man who was stabbed in Melbourne's north is in hospital as police search for his attackers.

In what police believe was a targeted attack, the 44-year-old suffered wounds to his head and upper body during a home invasion by three men at Roxburgh Park at about 4.40am on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old boy from the house attempted to intervene during the incident and sustained a hand injury.

Police say at some stage the group threatened the occupants with a firearm and it's believed a shot was discharged inside the property.

The man is now in a critical but stable condition at Royal Melbourne Hospital while the wounded teenager was also taken to hospital by a family member.

The offenders fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police are searching for the group and are keen to speak to witnesses and anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage.
