A reported rift between First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump's executive assistant Natalie Harp has intensified after biographer Michael Wolff alleged the two women are locked in a 'secret power struggle' inside the White House.
The claim, which centres on access and proximity to the 80-year-old commander-in-chief, has reignited months of speculation about who really sits closest to the president.
To recall, the story first gained traction in mid-2026 when reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan published excerpts of Harp's private, admiring letters to Trump in their book Regime Change.
Wolff, who said he obtained the letters earlier from campaign sources, has since doubled down on his account, claiming that Harp has effectively displaced family members as the woman closest to Trump.

Adding another layer to the drama, celebrity astrologer Inbaal Honigman said that Melania, a Taurus, and Harp, a Leo, are astrologically primed for conflict. Wolff's Claims and the White House Response
Wolff's most explosive allegation is that Melania has refused to appear alongside Trump when Harp is in the room. Writing in his Substack newsletter Howl, he claimed that the First Lady's public appearances were 'carefully negotiated and choreographed' but that she 'would not show up if Harp was around.'
'Since Harp was always around, Melania never was,' Wolff wrote, adding that Melania appeared with her husband only in the final week of the 2024 campaign.
The White House has rejected Wolff's account, with officials branding him a 'serial liar' and dismissing the feud talk as tabloid gossip. Mark Beckman, a spokesman for Melania, criticised the media's obsession with Harp, calling her a 'hard-working, loyal White House aide' and a cancer survivor who received off-label treatment with the president's help.
'They don't know anything about the First Lady's personal and private life,' Beckman said. 'They don't even take the time to put us on air to cover these incredible achievements that our First Lady has accomplished.'
Yet the optics remain awkward. During a roughly month-long stretch from 19 July to 20 August 2026, Melania was absent from public events, fuelling speculation she was avoiding situations where Harp would be present.
At the Freedom 250 IndyCar Grand Prix in Washington in late August, a viral video showed a brief, serious exchange between the first couple before Melania walked away, with Harp later spotted nearby.
Not everyone buys the feud narrative. Several sources told commentator Rob Schuter that Melania is 'grateful' for Harp because the aide's constant attention eases pressure on the First Lady. 'Donald demands constant attention, and Natalie genuinely seems to enjoy giving it to him,' one source said.
Nothing is confirmed yet so everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
What is clear is that Harp's role has expanded well beyond typical executive assistant duties. She has been dubbed 'the Human Printer' for carrying a portable charger to supply Trump with printed news, and reportedly attends almost every White House meeting, functioning as an informal back channel.
Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff even suggested during a campaign event that Trump 'wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie,' a remark that only poured fuel on the fire.
So where does this leave the First Lady? If Wolff is right, Melania has ceded the day-to-day intimacy of the presidency to Harp, appearing only when protocol demands it.
If the White House is right, the whole thing is a distraction from her actual work. Either way, the story isn't going anywhere soon.
