Mehrdad Ghodoussi issues optimistic Newcastle United message after Leeds draw

Mehrdad Ghodoussi says Newcastle United 'gave everything' despite failing to break Leeds United's stubborn resistance in their goalless draw at St James' Park.

The Magpies failed to register a seventh win on the bounce but extended their unbeaten run to 14 games across all competitions.

They sit third at the end of 2022 after a stellar season so far and Ghodoussi is remaining optimistic. The Newcastle co-owner wrote to his 116k followers on Twitter: "The boys gave everything. We now move on and focus on the next game."

Newcastle had a number of chances to take all three points but were wasteful in the final third. Kieran Trippier curled a free-kick into the penalty area, which was guided towards goal by the outstretched leg of Sven Botman, but Illan Meslier got down to save.

Fabian Schar paced into the penalty area and went down after a tangling of legs with Tyler Adams but Simon Hooper didn't point to the spot.

Another Trippier free-kick led to a golden chance for Newcastle when the loose ball presented itself to Miguel Almiron. But Meslier emerged from his goal line to foil Almiron bravely at his feet.

Rodrigo had a rare chance for the visitors when his bending strike was palmed away by Nick Pope. Schar was at the thick of the drama once again when his header was superbly denied by Meslier, and Sean Longstaff blasted a gilt-edged chance over the crossbar late on.
