Meghan should have 'read script' and cold Royals claims don't ring true, says expert

Meghan Markle and Prince's Harry's explosive new docuseries has revealed the inner workings of the Duchesses first experiences with the Royal Family.

Amongst them, Meghan recalls cold and alienating meetings with Royals, along with more casual dinners in which she claims her appearance seemed to be judged.

On one occasion, Meghan says she surprised Kate Middleton by wearing a pair of ripped jeans and going barefoot for a kitchen supper.

Speaking in episode two of the six-part Harry & Meghan Netflix, she said: "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.

"I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits. I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside."

But royal expert and biographer Ingrid Seward has told the Mirror she finds it hard to envision Kate's alleged reaction.

She revealed she thinks Meghan, as an actress and intelligent woman, should have "read the script" on the Royal family.

She told The Mirror: "The Duchess of Sussex said she found the 'formality' of being in the royal family 'surprising.'

"Why would an intelligent woman – as she kept reminding us – not realise that the family of the man she is currently dating are a little more formal than the average Californian?

"They are the royal family with over a thousand years of history, ritual and formality are part of their existence.

"Meghan insinuated Harry’s brother and sister-in-law were surprised by her casual appearance.

"'When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.' she said.

"If Kate was startled, she would have been far too well-mannered to let on.

"They were having a ‘kitchen supper’ not a grand dinner party and although being hugged by Harry’s girlfriend, whom she had never met before might have been surprising, it would not have been ‘jarring’.

"Kate as we know was brought up to be polite and kind and Harry’s happiness with his new girlfriend would have been infectious. Nothing would have pleased her more than to see her friend Harry so obviously in love.

"She had met most of his other girlfriends and became close to Chelsy Davy.

"She liked Cressida Bonas and invited Harry to bring her around soon after Prince George was born so she could meet the baby."

Ingrid, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, believes Meghan's painting of the royals as "cold" does not quite ring true.

She added to The Mirror: "Meghan’s claim that the royal family were somewhat cold just doesn’t ring completely true. 'I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.' Meghan said.

"It is partly understandable. It is hard for newcomers to take it all in, but for actor Meghan it should have been like learning a part.

"I can’t believe she didn’t first read the script so as to present herself in the best light as she always has done."
