Meghan Markle has sent a hidden message to Iran with her choice of T-shirt amid ongoing protests in the country.
Iran has been rocked by discontent in recent weeks after the death of a young woman who failed to wear her hijab correctly sparked a global movement.
Making a surprise appearance at an event at Spotify’s headquarters on Tuesday, Meghan spoke in support of the protests, lauding those taking part, whilst wearing a T-shirt carrying a message written in Farsi.
The Duchess of Sussex took to the stage at an event for Women@Spotify wearing a t-shirt with ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ emblazoned across the front.
Meghan spoke of the “courage” of Iranian protestors who took to the streets after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini when she was in police custody.
She was arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict morality laws which require women to cover their hair.
Meghan appeared with two executive members of Archewell - executive vice president of global communications Ashley Hansen, and president Mandana Dayani, both of whom are Iranian.
Dayani said it was a “proud day” at Archewell for her and Hansen and in an Instagram post she wrote: “Meghan spoke about the revolution being led by women and young girls in Iran.
“The courage and bravery they show every day, and their leadership and advocacy of basic human rights: women, life, freedom.
“As an Iranian woman who fled her home country in pursuit of these very freedoms, I could not have been more grateful for how she chooses, again and again, to advocate for women around the world.”
Mahsa, a member of Iran's Kurdish minority, died in the custody of Tehran's notorious morality police.
They claimed she had been wearing "inappropriate attire" after she reportedly breached the state's harsh dress code, which states that an all-covering headscarf must be worn in public.
Unrest after her funeral spread through the country and through social media where supporters started cutting off their hair in support, while using the hashtag #HairForFreedom.
French actresses Marion Cottillard and Juliette Binoche were among the high-profile figures to join the movement.
The author of ‘Finding Freedom’ Omid Scobie tweeted out the photo of Meghan, Hansen, and Dayani, writing: “Meghan stands in solidarity with women and girls in Iran."
Meghan has spoken out in support of women’s issues in the past.
After abortion rights were threatened when Roe V. Wade was overturned in the US, she told Vogue: “Men need to be vocal in this moment and beyond because these are decisions that affect relationships, families, and communities at large.
“They may target women, but the consequences impact all of us.
“My husband and I talked about that a lot over the past few days. He's a feminist too”.
