Meghan and Harry's 'extraordinary and unexpected' interview which left TV crew reeling

Harry and Meghan are the names on every royal watcher's lips at the moment as we all avidly await the news of whether the couple will attend the coronation of King Charles ll on May 6.

There's still uncertainty surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their plans for the event, which falls on Prince Archie's 4th birthday and could lead to lots of awkward moments in the glare of the spotlight as millions of people tune in to the televised Westminster Abbey event.

Prince Harry and Meghan, of course, are not strangers to the public eye and are used to causing a storm these days following their exit from the Firm.

As well as speaking out in their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey after they moved to start their new life in California, revelations from the couple also came out in spectacular style with the release of Harry's tell-all memoir Spare earlier this year.

But another well publicised interview with the couple also sent shockwaves around the globe back in 2019 - and it's said to have left the TV crew behind the cameras "reeling" reports the Mirror.

Harry & Meghan: An African Journey was a behind the scenes documentary which followed the newlywed duke and duchess and then-baby Archie on their 10-day Royal Tour of Africa.

And during an emotional chat with ITV journalist Tom Bradby, Meghan opened up in a way that many viewers at home were not used to seeing the Royal Family behave, as she was asked if she was "okay" in reference to the pressures facing her as a new mum.

Former ITN editorial director Chris Shaw has reflected on the broadcaster's headline-grabbing 2019 interview with the Duchess of Sussex, saying the "little conversation in South Africa" seemed "so outlandishly unexpected and shocking".

Mr Shaw, who announced his departure from the company in January after 25 years, also said there is a "contradiction" between the Sussexes' desire for privacy and their willingness to speak about their private lives.

Speaking to Deadline, Mr Shaw was asked whether the team behind the programme instantly knew the footage was "explosive".

He said: "That little conversation in South Africa seemed so outlandishly unexpected and shocking ... we knew we had something pretty extraordinary."

Former Suits actress Meghan became upset when she was asked if she was okay, and she described her past year as a member of the royal family as "hard" and "really challenging".

Meghan was asked about the "true pressures of life in the spotlight and the toll it has taken on them both".

She replied: "Look, any woman especially when they are pregnant you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging, and then when you have a newborn – you know.

"And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed it’s, well…"

Meghan then thanked Tom for checking on how she was doing during a tough time.

She added: "And, also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m okay. But it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes."

Following up on her answer, Tom asked: "And the answer is, would it be fair to say, not really okay, as in it’s really been a struggle?"

Meghan paused before replying simply: "Yes".

Mr Shaw added: "I feel a bit sorry for them because I think they're in the eye of the most appalling storm and they didn't mean to go there."
