Instead of completing his education at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), he chose to leave college and join Microsoft, believing that real-world experience aligned better with his long-term ambitions.
Choosing a Different Path
In a post that recently went viral on LinkedIn, Verma revealed that he joined Microsoft before he was even legally old enough to drink. Describing his journey as unconventional, he explained that the decision was not driven by a lack of respect for higher education but by a clear understanding of his career goals.
According to Verma, students generally fall into two categories. The first group enters college to explore different interests and discover their passion, making institutions like IIT the ideal environment for growth. The second group already knows exactly what they want to build and prefers to start working on it as early as possible.
Verma believes he belongs to the latter category.
An Impressive Track Record Before Microsoft
Long before joining the global technology giant, Verma had already built an impressive résumé. At just 18 years old, he became the world's youngest Google Developer Expert, earning recognition for his technical expertise.
He also represented India in Japan's Sakura Science Programme, an international initiative that promotes scientific collaboration among young innovators. Adding another milestone to his achievements, Verma presented one of his applications to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, further establishing himself as a promising young developer.
Why Microsoft Was the Right Choice
While many aspire to work at Microsoft for its prestige, Verma says the company's brand name was never the primary attraction.
"I didn't join for the badge. I joined because every rockstar I wanted to learn from was one ping away," he wrote.
He explained that working at Microsoft gives him direct access to some of the world's most influential software engineers and creators, including people behind technologies such as C#, TypeScript, and Kubernetes. According to him, conversations with these experts provide insights that cannot be found through online tutorials or AI-generated content.
Verma believes artificial intelligence can help execute ideas, but genuine creativity, innovation, and product intuition come from learning directly from people who have built industry-defining technologies.
Advice for Aspiring Developers
Verma also shared a message for students and aspiring software developers who already know what they want to pursue.
He encouraged them not to wait for a degree, job title, or external validation before beginning their journey.
"Technology won't ask for your Bachelor's, Master's or PhD to access knowledge. If you want to build, just build," he wrote.
He emphasized that today's developers have unprecedented access to learning resources through artificial intelligence, the internet, and global online communities. In his view, anyone with curiosity and determination can acquire world-class knowledge without following a traditional educational path.
