Meet Mikaila Ulmer, the young entrepreneur who turned her family lemonade recipe into a growing business while donating part of her profits to help save endangered bees

At four years old, Mikaila Ulmer was not thinking about entrepreneurship, retail distribution or building a national brand. She was simply afraid of bees. Two stings in one week in 2009 left her frightened enough that her parents encouraged her to learn more about the insects instead of avoiding them. What she discovered turned a childhood fear into the idea that would eventually become Me & the Bees Lemonade.

The research gave Ulmer a different way to look at what had frightened her. She learned that bees play an essential role in pollinating many of the crops people depend on for food, while threats such as habitat loss, pesticides, disease and parasites can put pressure on pollinator populations. The lesson did not make bees any less intimidating overnight, but it gave her a reason to pay attention to them. Soon, that curiosity became connected to something much more familiar: her great-grandmother's lemonade recipe.

The recipe came from Great Granny Helen and dated to the 1940s. Ulmer adapted it by replacing conventional sugar with local honey, creating a drink that connected her family's history with the cause she had begun to care about. She named the early product BeeSweet Lemonade and attached a conservation commitment to the business from the beginning, pledging 10 percent of profits to organizations working to protect bees.

That decision gave the lemonade stand a purpose beyond selling a cold drink. Ulmer's first sales came through events including the Acton Children's Business Fair and Austin Lemonade Day, where the young entrepreneur could test the product with real customers. What began as a child's small-scale business gradually moved into wholesale, and an early order helped push the company beyond the neighborhood stands where it had started.
