Mediterranean pool design made a splash at Jennifer Lopez's Miami Beach home in 2004 – 20 years later, the look is topping outdoor trends (and easy to replicate)

Let's take a trip to Miami in 2004... the club is bumping, the architecture is oozing modernity, and the interiors are dripping in excess. Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez's Star Island home stands tall on the beach. An aerial photograph of J.Lo lounging in her pool freezes the moment in time.

Though much has changed in the 20 years since the picture was taken, the pool in Jennifer's Mediterranean garden is just as on-trend as the day it was snapped. The earthy limestone patio with a rounded, Italian-style fountain and the subtle blue tiling are utterly timeless. Planters bursting with lively flowers and herbs give the space a welcoming, verdant feel.

In fact, Mediterranean backyard design has become even more popular since we spotted it at J.Lo's house. Google data shows a 190% increase in searches for 'Mediterranean garden' this summer.

Grace Thornton, landscape design expert at Marshalls Gardens explains the trend stating: 'We’ve all wanted to bottle that feeling you get from relaxing outside on a warm summer's evening whilst abroad. Taking that look and feel and making it work for your garden is a great way to create your own local escape.'

Shop the Mediterranean Outdoor Style

Luckily for those who love Jennifer Lopez's look, replicating the Mediterranean garden trend around your pool is exceedingly simple.

'Think about engaging all the senses,' advises Jodi Peterman of Elizabeth Erin Designs. 'Build an aromatic herb garden right next to your pool, filled with Mediterranean staples like rosemary, thyme, and oregano. Not only will it give you fresh ingredients for cooking or cocktails, but it also brings the scents of the Mediterranean to your poolside.'

She recommends adding flair to your pool idea with color, as J.Lo has done. Jodi states: 'Instead of traditional terracotta, go for oversized, colorful ceramics that reflect the bright blues and yellows of Mediterranean coastal towns. Use them for plants, water features, or even as standalone art pieces.'

Creating a stylish entertaining area using the best fire pit and outdoor furniture is another great way to transform your Mediterranean pool area into a relaxed retreat.

Jodi suggests: 'Add contrast to your watery oasis with stone fire bowls. The flickering flames create a luxurious balance of the elements—fire and water—evoking those warm, evening vibes of Mediterranean beachfront lounges. If you're still in the construction phase, it’s smart to plan by running gas lines to where your fire bowl(s) will be. This not only makes them easier to use but also adds a touch of sophistication and convenience to your outdoor setup.'

As the years go by, some looks will remain timeless, while others will fade from fashion. A luxurious, Mediterranean style pool will always be on trend.
