A child who seems fully recovered from measles is not always out of danger. A recent CIDRAP report on measles' long-term effects outlines brain complications that can appear weeks after infection, along with one rare disease that can surface 7 to 10 years later.
The warning comes as cases keep climbing. The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,078 confirmed cases across 41 counties in 2026 as of Oct. 7, including 207 hospitalizations and five measles-associated deaths. For families of infants or unvaccinated people who had measles this year, the risk does not necessarily end when the rash fades.
